The Al Fresco Dinner Series put on by Joy Road Catering had been on our Okanagan bucket list for years. Living in Vancouver though, we could never go because dinners were always on a Wednesday or a Sunday. Now living in Kelowna, it finally became a possibility.
Travis decided to surprise me and managed to get us a reservation for one of their vineyard dinner at God’s Mountain Estate. It was the only dinner date still available, and I am not surprised, because these dinners sell out fast! Needless to say I was very excited (thank you sweetie!)
We got dressed and drove the hour + drive down to Penticton. We managed to find God’s Estate, and the location is pretty incredible. While the resort itself is a bit eclectic and a tad in shambles, the setting can’t be beat. Surrounded by a vineyard, fruit trees everywhere, endless views of Skaha Lake and blinding front seats to the sunset.
There was some time before dinner to mingle, walk around, and sip some bubbly.
Of course the dinner was held outside, so we could continue to take in the views and the sunset. The group was split between two long tables, and everything was served family-style. We had great conversations with the other guests at the table. The food was delicious, simple, and from very close by. Indeed, one of the wine we drank was from the grapes grown less than 10 feet away! You can’t get more local than this.
To make this evening even more incredible, it turned out that our night was being photographed for a magazine article – and we were sitting right beside the article’s fact researcher. We ended up having our pictures taken for the article, and we now have lovely, updated pictures of the two of us!
Finally the sun went down. Coffee and tea was served. And then it was time to drive home.
What a fantastic, magical evening! I strongly recommend the event to anyone who can attend.
