Wheelchair Olympics | Texas

As you may have noticed in yesterday’s photos, my mother-in-law had recently broken her leg and was wheelchair-bound. In a quest to both appreciate how difficult it is to maneuver a wheelchair and to entertain Ginger, the family got together for a two-event wheelchair competition. To make things more accurate, our legs also had to be in the same position Ginger had been keeping hers.

Event #1: Held in the barn, we laid out a course using canned vegetables. Each veggie was assigned a wheel side and direction (for example, right wheel backwards), and point value. The challenge was to then squish each vegetable successfully on the first try, with no prior wheelchair practice. It was not as easy as it sounds, with the carrots proving to be the hardest vegetable to squish (they kept slipping away).

I came in second, so I was pretty impressed with myself!

Event #2: A straight forward race across the front yard. As easy as it sounds, if you know at all what you are doing. I was very terrible at this, and even ended up in the grass. Here are our finish line crossings (most of these are animated gif, so if you can’t see them move, please open up this post in a web browser):

Overall it was a really fun day, and I hope that Ginger was truly entertained. I think that we all walked away with a whole lot more respect to those who use a wheelchair everyday, or any day!
