Train to Istanbul | Bulgaria + Turkey

We caught the night train from Plovdiv to Istanbul, and it turned out to be more of an adventure than we had wished for. First, our train was late by well over an hour. The cabins were comfortable and plush, but had bedbugs. While I was lucky to not get bitten, Travis got a few bites and the guy in the cabin next to ours had blood stains all over his nice dress shirt. We reached the Bulgaria – Turkey border at around 1 AM, where we were stamped out of Bulgaria by officers on the train. Then we rode off again into Turkey, and were checked-in into Turkey at around 4 AM. Still fuzzy from sleep we had to exit the train into frigid cold air. We paid our visa fees and got our stamp and off to bed it was again. We finally made it into Istanbul by 10:30 AM, about 2 hours later than scheduled. In spite of this though, we are happy to be here: later today we get to see my mom, we are back in Asia again and to top things off, today is our first wedding anniversary! More posts to follow about today.
